Retention Phase

The retention phase in dentistry is a stage in orthodontic treatment that is aimed at retaining the effects of braces after being removed.

Getting your teeth aligned requires a number of dental procedures.

At Dr. F. Isaac Hakim dental clinic, after we remove your braces, we move directly to the retention phase where we give you retainers to maintain the new position of the teeth. After removing your braces, your teeth may still shift to their previous position if not well guided.

We normally carry out the retention phase for at least six months in order to ensure maximum benefit from the orthodontic treatment.

After six months, our orthodontist will instruct on how best to continue with treatment based on how well the teeth have repositioned.

Important information about retainers

The retainers are intended to continue the work previously done by the braces; to hold the teeth in their new position. Retainers come in various different materials and types.

Depending on the state of your dental structure and also your preference, our dentist will help you choose the most suitable dental retainer. The best retainers are those that are custom made and suited for your specific dental structure.

At Dr. F. Isaac Hakim dental clinic, we provide special customer based orthodontic treatment that is aimed at addressing your specific dental issue.

The retention phase leaves the teeth very sensitive to change since the braces have been removed. This means they can easily move back to previous positions or other unintended ones. We recommend wearing retainers most of the time in order to enjoy the maximum effect of dental treatment.

Caring for your retainers

Before leaving with your new retainers, our dentist will first inform you of all of the instructions of how to use them and put them on.

One of the things we strongly recommend is brushing your retainers at least twice a day to ensure that they are always clean. This will also help protect your dental health. The dentist will provide you with a case for the retainers where you can place them when not using.

Keep the retainers away from children and toys to prevent having them damaged. Retainers should be damaged at all times except when brushing, eating and drinking. This is intended to increase the efficiency of the treatment.

You can soak your retainers overnight in a recommended dental solution about once a week to keep them wet and soft. However, you should avoid using other solutions to soak the retainers that are not recommended by a dentist since you may damage them.

When you come to Dr. F. Isaac Hakim dental clinic for orthodontic treatment, we will give you two retainers after removing your braces to help maintain the position of the teeth.

The first retainer is a removable one which is placed on the upper side of the mouth.

The second retainer is placed at the lower side of the mouth but is fixed. This means it cannot be removed until you visit the orthodontist for another session.
